Caledonian Heights
John Muir was born here and I couldn't help but think of him when I looked upon the Scottish countryside and wilderness. My years in California will always be highlighted by my time in the Sierra mountains that Muir fought long to preserve. Yosemite that only till you have set eyes on it, explored it and understood it's grandeur can you appreciate the achievement that is there intact (somewhat) largely thanks to him and not completely obliterated by some mining company. There I learned so much about myself and my relationship to the natural world, to the mountains. Yosemite changed me and I cannot separate Yosemite and Muir in my head. The same way that I cannot separate Scotland and Muir. Muir said "the battle for conservation will go on endlessly. It is part of the universal battle between right and wrong". A battle I fear we are losing and in losing it we lose ourselves. I've always believed in the sanctuary of nature so I'll always believe in the need to protect it. Some of my best days have been in the mountains with friends and a camera. Or completely alone in the mountains learnng what mattered most. At least to me.
