The Turf
The practice of cutting peatlands for 'turf' as it is commonly known, has been carried on in Ireland for centuries. Used as a domestic heating source many families own sections of bog from which they cut the turf every year. It is a labour intensive process to cut, dry and remove the turf from the bog and a familiar practice that can be seen taking place across Ireland during the summer months. Due to new EU conservation regulations that prohibit the cutting of peatlands the tradition may become a thing of the past.
